Where It All Began
Our story began in 1990 in a cozy 20-seat taverna, where founder Tony Farah served authentic flavors with warm hospitality. From a small, local eatery, Café Athena grew into a neighborhood favorite, staying true to its roots—homemade dishes, Mediterranean tradition, and the joy of sharing memorable meals.
2005 – La Jolla
In 2005, we introduced Apollonia in La Jolla—bringing a modern touch to our traditional Greek flavors, offering a larger, more contemporary space while preserving the heart of genuine hospitality. With an elevated dining experience, the restaurant quickly grew into a popular destination. In 2020, however, new development plans led to the closing and end of Apollonia’s 15-year chapter.
2019 – Pacific Beach
Shifting our focus back on Pacific Beach, we transformed Café Athena in 2019 with innovative aspirations. With Tony working alongside his son, Joe, we introduced a new full bar and expanded our Mediterranean concept. Embracing diverse flavors, we paired handcrafted cocktails and fine wines with authentic cuisine, creating a harmonious fusion of tradition and modernity.
Family Traditions
As the journey continues, Joe carries forward the family’s passion for hospitality, honoring Mediterranean roots while embracing fresh changes and a commitment to excellence, ensuring the restaurant remains the cherished destination it has been for so long.
